It Didn’t Hurt Much

In the underground, there is a carrier pigeon

who works split shifts delivering remembrances

to the topside world. She is recognized in fragments:

the snap of my uncle’s shotgun, the thunderclap

of the ancient oak felled on my father’s lawn….

A white dove flying with its wings spread, set against a dark, leafy background.
A bright comet with a long tail visible in a clear night sky filled with stars.

A Shower of Stars and I Wait

Memento mori. Remember you must die,

I tell myself every time you look at me

like I am the stars, the sun and the moon.

I am just sinew and bone, dear, but

you swear I have orbit….

Remnants

The glacier melted that year and it flooded

and made lakes in the lower fields. Channels

of water gravitated there: like veins

returning to heart— repeating, essential.

In the middle of this erosion, tiny worlds opened up….

The Taxidermist

Forget-me-nots pressed

purple blue-pledges into

the whites of my dress. I want

that to be enough dying for today…

Cow herd grazing in a field during sunset, with trees and a house in the background.
