A bright comet with a long, glowing tail streaks across a star-filled sky.

A Shower of Stars and I Wait

Memento mori. Remember you must die,

I tell myself every time you look at me like

I am the stars, the sun and the moon. I am just

sinew and bone, dear, but you swear I have orbit.

If you could pull away, you’d spin a new course,

collide a million times with smaller bodies,

each crater a kiss. Myself, too unyielding.

Amor fati. Love one’s fate. The Greeks thought

each burning body was home, was you. I talk

to you in my dreams like that, like you are still

holding a galaxy together. Can it be enough

to wander that dizzy radius, ever-destined

towards collision? A matrix of strangers making

their turbulent descent, and your light shining

always the brightest? My fate is to die. I must love

this impact the hardest. Until it is breaking.

Until I no longer can.
